I Respect All Cities—Except Las Vegas

The Decline of Las Vegas Tourism

According to recent data, tourism in Las Vegas has seen a significant drop. In June 2025, there was an 11.3% decrease in the number of visitors compared to June 2024. This decline has sparked discussions about the reasons behind it. While some attribute it to a general decrease in international travel to the United States, others have their own personal grievances with the city.

A Personal Perspective on Las Vegas

As someone who recently visited Las Vegas, I can understand why fewer people are choosing to go there. However, my dislike for the city isn’t based on its actual qualities but rather on a deep-seated aversion that has developed over time. I’ve always found it difficult to respect the city, despite recognizing that not all aspects of it are negative.

The Utah Connection

For many residents of Utah, especially those from the state, Las Vegas is often just a stopover on the way to destinations like Disneyland or Newport Beach. These trips usually involve a night spent in a hotel or casino, often chosen based on the best deals found on sites like Expedia.com. Many Utahns have memories of family road trips that included a visit to the city, with parents warning their children not to touch slot machines as they exited the MGM Grand or Excalibur.

The Suburbs vs. the Strip

While I don’t hate the broader area of Nevada that is commonly referred to as Las Vegas, I do have strong feelings about the Strip itself. The Strip feels more like a playground for young children, with its colorful castles, replicas of famous landmarks, and circus-themed hotels. It’s an environment that doesn’t seem to cater well to adults, making it feel quite embarrassing.

A Different Approach to Visiting

My friend and I decided to avoid the typical Vegas experience by flying instead of driving and staying outside the Strip. We were only willing to visit our least-favorite city for a Beyoncé concert, which shows how much we love her music. Our journey was uneventful until after the show, when we found ourselves stuck trying to get a ride back to our hotel.

Challenges at the Airport

The airport presented its own set of problems. During security screening, a malfunctioning body scan machine led to a pat-down, which felt unsettling. The flight delays added to the frustration, with the situation worsening when a crew member went missing. The delay turned into a four-hour ordeal, during which we had to wait in the terminal while hearing the loud sounds of slot machines.

A Disappointing Experience

After a long wait, we finally boarded the plane, only to face another delay. We used meal vouchers to buy food at a Quiznos, which had a long waitlist. Despite the challenges, we eventually made it back to Salt Lake City, where we felt a sense of relief and appreciation for our home.

Final Thoughts

Las Vegas may continue to attract tourists, but for many, the experience is filled with disappointments and frustrations. Whether it's the Strip, the airport, or the overall atmosphere, the city has a way of making even the most enjoyable visits feel like a struggle. For now, my friend and I are content to avoid the city, at least until the next big event or trip.
