Discover the Beauty of Coastal Connecticut with a Sunset Cruise and Seal Watch

Experience the magic of coastal Connecticut with a unique sunset cruise and seal watch offered by Blackhawk Fishing, based in Niantic. This special trip combines breathtaking evening views with the chance to observe local seals in their natural habitat. Whether you're a resident or just visiting, it's an ideal way to spend an evening on the water.

About Blackhawk Fishing

Blackhawk Fishing is a family-owned charter service that provides top-rated fishing trips for all skill levels. From beginners to experienced anglers, the crew ensures a memorable day on the water. With fast boats and daily trips, it’s one of the best ways to explore Long Island Sound. The team is passionate about fishing and dedicated to making every trip enjoyable.

In addition to fishing excursions, they also offer a sunset and seal watch cruise. This event typically takes place on Saturday evenings during the warmer months and is perfect for families. Many visitors, including myself, have returned multiple times for this experience.

Getting to Blackhawk Fishing

Blackhawk Fishing is located in Niantic, near downtown. The boat departs from Cini Park, which is off Route 156. The best way to reach the location is via I-95, with Exit 72 being the recommended choice due to construction at Exit 74. From Exit 72, take a left toward Niantic and follow Route 156. If you take Exit 74, you’ll need to turn onto Route 161 and then onto Route 156 when you reach downtown Niantic.

Upon arriving at Cini Park, park anywhere in the lot and head to the dock at the mouth of the Niantic River. When you arrive, check in at the ticket booth to receive wristbands and join the line for boarding the boat.

The Boat Experience

The Black Hawk boat is custom-built for party boat fishing. It is fast, clean, and comfortable, offering two floors for seating. The first floor includes indoor tables and a small galley for snacks and drinks, as well as bench seating outside. The second floor features open views and bench seating, making it a popular spot for many. However, only 25 people can sit on the top deck, so it’s advisable to arrive early if you want a seat there.

What to Expect on the Cruise

Each cruise offers a unique experience, and I’ve taken the trip three times, each time with different highlights. My first trip in August 2024 took us to Little Gull Island, where we spotted seals and viewed lighthouses like the Little Gull Island Lighthouse and Race Rock Lighthouse. The following year, in May 2025, we had to change our plans due to rough waters and instead explored the Thames River, passing by Harkness Memorial State Park and New London Harbor Light.

My most recent trip in July 2025 took us to Gardiners Point Island, where we saw seals swimming and watched the sunset at Orient Point Lighthouse. Each trip provided unforgettable moments and stunning views.

Is This Cruise Worth Taking?

Absolutely! There’s a reason why I’ve taken it three times already. I always book it whenever I see it advertised. The crew is friendly, the views are incredible, and the experience is unmatched. I would do this cruise every week if possible.

Tips Before You Go

  • Wear layers: It can be significantly cooler on the water, especially after sunset.
  • Bring sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun while out on the water.
  • Pack binoculars: They help spot seals that may be further away.
  • Bring a telephoto lens: For the best photos, use a camera with a long lens.
  • Bring your own food and drinks: Snacks and drinks are available on board, but bringing your own is encouraged.
  • Use cash for tips: The crew works hard, and tipping is appreciated.
