A New Chapter for Dappled Light Adventures

What was once a family retreat nestled among the trees in Red River Gorge has evolved into a thriving travel destination and family-run business. The Rains family, led by father-son duo Kevin and Izaac Rains, has transformed their 50-acre property near Daniel Boone National Forest into a unique glamping experience. Now, they're taking their vision to the next level with the opening of a new community space designed for large groups.

Dappled Light Adventures, founded in 2021, is located on a scenic plot of land adjacent to the gorge, just east of Lexington. Initially, the property served as a place for weekend getaways and a refuge from the hustle of everyday life. About five years ago, Izaac Rains, who is now 28, proposed turning the land into a glamping rental business. This idea allowed the family to share their love for the outdoors with others while offering a luxurious camping alternative.

The concept of glamping allows guests to enjoy the natural surroundings without the hassle of traditional camping. As the business grew, the Rains family expanded their offerings, building five glamping tents that can accommodate one to six people. In 2022, they brought in a third owner, Mike Rader, to help build four more tents and fully embrace the short-term rental model.

The Vision Behind the Rookery

In September 2025, Dappled Light Adventures will unveil the "Rookery," a spacious community area designed for business retreats, faith-based groups, youth groups, and yoga retreats. Kevin Rains shared with the Courier Journal that the decision to open the Rookery came from recognizing the value of hosting larger groups on their property.

"I think for both of us, we just realized that running retreats was a more efficient way to use that property," Kevin said. The Rookery is a 15,000-square-foot cliffside building featuring a kitchen, living area, dining area, deck, and a large fireplace. Its design emphasizes connection and community, with large glass doors that open to a breathtaking view of the valley below.

Izaac Rains explained that the team worked closely with engineers and architects to bring the space as close to the cliff edge as possible. The result is a serene environment that offers stunning vistas and a sense of tranquility. The space is ideal for group activities such as meals, games, and yoga sessions.

A Unique Experience for All

John Herman, a friend of the Rains family, recently attended an unofficial retreat at the Rookery and praised the facility. He described it as a "game changer" and highlighted the hospitality that defines the Dappled Light experience. The Rookery is designed to provide top-notch amenities while maintaining a sense of privacy, making it an ideal setting for both personal and professional retreats.

Izaac Rains emphasized that the goal of Dappled Light Adventures is to redefine what a retreat can be. He aims to move away from the typical conference room settings and instead offer meaningful experiences that encourage personal growth and connection. Through outdoor retreats, he has seen participants develop a deeper appreciation for nature and the world around them.

Booking a Stay at Dappled Light Adventures

Currently, bookings for the glamping tents and cabin are available year-round, depending on availability. The Rookery will open for use in September, marking a new chapter for the business. Guests interested in experiencing the unique blend of luxury, nature, and community can visit Dappled Light Adventures' website for more information and to book a stay.

As Dappled Light Adventures continues to grow, the Rains family remains committed to their roots. While they are focusing more on retreats, they will continue to welcome families and individuals seeking a peaceful getaway. This balance between small group hospitality and larger group experiences ensures that everyone who visits can find something special at Dappled Light Adventures.
