It's that time of year again — time for saying happy birthday to our great nation. That means hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pie (and possibly a green Jell-O mold with chunks of fruit suspended within it that no one will eat and is mostly for making fun and/or decorative purposes).
It also means watching the sky light up across Palm Beach County , as fireworks are launched over the Intracoastal Waterway, ballfields, and beyond. (And if pyrotechnics aren't your thing, there will even be a drone show down in Deerfield Beach.)
Don't sit home and be tormented by the neighbors' puny bottle rockets, firecrackers and Roman candles, get out and see the real thing and truly be happy. Plus, you can rest assured that your neighbors will still be going when you get home, for the rest of the night and the next day.

Keeping pets safe from fireworks
July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters as they are housing companion animals that fled in fright the night before. They are often found miles from their homes, disoriented and exhausted. If your pet is upset by thunder or other loud noises, Fourth of July fireworks can be utterly terrifying. Keep them inside, and if possible keep windows closed and draw the shades to minimize the sound and light. Be sure that all ID tags are properly affixed to your pet’s collar. Do not leave them alone; ensure someone can stay with them. If you’re staying with them, act calm and give them reassuring pets, belly rubs, etc. Consult your vet regarding commercially available products that help to reduce stress, like species specific pheromones or even medications. “It’s with these tips and tricks we can keep our furry companions relaxed throughout the holiday,” says American Humane Society President and CEO Robin Ganzert, Ph.D.
